New cafe at Killiney: Artisan Boulangerie Co.

There was this day where I had dinner at a coffeeshop along Killiney Road and I saw this western style cafe from opposite the road and I told my partner to check it out after our dinner. Never did I expect to find so many choices of pies, sourdough loaves, pies, sandwiches and even quality, decent coffee at this 3-month old cafe at affordable prices!

My partner and I were spoilt for choice! But we decided to have light desserts that will not be too heavy on our palette (and hips). The pear & almond tart was really delicious! I like that the tart base was not too flaky and the almond filling goes very well with the pear. Perfect with a cup of coffee. The chocolate eclair on the other hand, was not up to my liking. The crust was a tad too hard and even though the chocolate mousse filling was fantastic, it didn't make me wanna finish up the whole thing in seconds.

Food aside, I really love the whole stylish and simplistic decor of the whole cafe with a very warm and cosy ambience. The lady serving at the counter was very patient as she recommended some top favorites to us and I truly appreciate such service staff who are polite, speaks well and welcoming! We had a little chat with the counter staff and got to know that it's only opened for about 3 months.

There's bread tasting available at the counter and prices range from $4 - $10 for the bread and $2 - $10+ for the pastries, tarts and sandwiches. This is definitely a place I want to bring my friends to for dessert and coffee after a watching a movie or a day of shopping!

Brunch at Choupinette

On our way to Turf Club to visit PasarBella, we passed by Choupinette that is located just beside Coronation Plaza and I remembered reading a blogger who blogged about the awesome eggs benedict. It looked packed to the brim during the day, so here we are to try a slice of French heaven in the evening.

It seemed like we booked the entire restaurant on a Saturday evening because there's only 2 couples in the restaurant having dinner. Good atmosphere and I love the cosy decor of the place with this air of class. First up, Eggs benedict!

The hollandaise sauce is slightly tangier than others that I have tried before, but I feel that it goes really well with the salty smoked salmon and toast! The zest certainly helped to whet my appetite for more bites. I guess they specialise in pastries and eggs benedict, so the toast at the bottom was quite soft and easy to cut through. The best eggs benedict I've tried so far in Singapore yet.

The chicken sausage was juicy and flavourful and very nicely grilled. I thought that the scrambled eggs was a little too bland and not as buttery as I preferred. But overall it was a hearty meal with grilled tomatoes, brown mushrooms and wholemeal bread.

At $22++ for 1 brunch set that includes a hot drink and a juice, I would say that it's reasonable for the quality of food served here. I read that their pastries are fresh and delectable, and I wished that I had left more space to try the dessert! Good thing that it's located along the main road, so that definitely upped the accessibility to the place.

French bakery & patisserie @ Tiong Bahru Bakery

Pardon my ignorance, but I thought that Tiong Bahru Bakery (TBB) was an old-school bakery like our friendly neighbourhood bakery Swee Heng when I first heard of TBB. Soft and buttery buns' aroma floated to my nostrils and the images of old-school sugary doughnuts immediately appeared in my mind when I picture the 'old school' name with bakery. Boy, was I wrong or was I wrong man?!?! Well, after some good reviews from die-hard fans of TBB, it was quite a coincidence that we chanced upon the bakery when we were walking around Raffles City Shopping Centre one Saturday afternoon.

Although I'm pretty sure all the bread and pastries are awesome in TBB, but curiosity got the better of me when I saw the black bun sitting among his pretty friends and despite my partner's raised eyebrow and a doubtful 'Really?', I went ahead and ordered the sandwich, together with a mini croissant and a huge strawberry croissant. Not forgetting our much-needed coffee.

Squid Ink Sandwich ($8.50)

In all honesty, there wasn't much of the squid ink taste in the buns. However, I do like the slightly chewy texture of the buns and it went very well together with the salty smoked salmon and ham and the fresh burst of wild rocket taste when you take a generous bite.

Lemon Curd tart ($6.00 ish)

The sweet and zesty custard really hit the spot... for a few seconds and then the sweetness just lingered and refused to go away! I would have preferred the curd to be less sweet a teeny bit and less of the tart. I was recommended to try Lemon Curd tart at this other cafe and I shall check it out soon.

TBB is definitely a place to be and be seen. Noticed a lot of hipsters hang out at the cafe, taking pictures (to instagram) and also a lot of families having brunch with their little kids, who by the way, are real lucky to have fond memories of TBB as the placed they grow up with. The prices are not exactly cheap, but reasonable for the quality and location they are in.

This place is so not old school and yet so hip with quality bakery and pastries. It's definitely a place I want to go back to and try all the pastries.

Flam's @ Orchard Central

Flam's

Even though we were a little skeptical about the standard of food here at Flam's, I was tempted for a light meal and the thin crust pizza looked pretty harmless for my tummy. The menu was not local-friendly at all with the french names, but thank god for English description!

For starters, we had Salade Bressane, which is salad with roasted chicken and I love the sweet honey mustard dressing that goes very well with the tender chicken and greens. Good appetizer alright!

For our mains to share, we had The Charolaise - minced beef thin-crust pizza with loads of rocket salad and drizzled with whole grain mustard sauce. Really tasty and light! It's really perfect for a light meal if you are trying to keep your calories in check or not wanna over-indulge.

Even though we had our dinner at 6+, the place was still quite empty and I hope more people will wanna give it a try cos the food here is really quite affordable and yummy!
